Italian Society of Authors and Publishers partners with Algorand to develop copyright management

The Italian Society of Authors and Publishers (SIAE), which was established for the collective management of authors’ rights, has partnered with blockchain company Algorand to develop a new blockchain-based platform for copyright management.

While SIAE had previously announced it was working on a similar project in collaboration with “La Sapienza” University of Rome and consulting company Blockchain Core on the Hyperledger platform, SIAE has decided to move development entirely onto the Algorand platform.

General Manager of SIAE, Gaetano Blandini, made the following comments about the goals of the project:

To explore the opportunities offered by technology, to imagine a future of solutions that guarantee greater efficiency and transparency to our members [...] Our collaboration with Algorand is part of a process of synergy and cooperation with major players in the fields of research and innovation, both on a national and on a global scale.

In a statement on the project, Professor Silvio Micali, founder of Algorand said that:

The collaboration between technology providers and companies projected into the future, such as SIAE, paves the way to great opportunities for progress towards economic models that promote inclusiveness, transparency, and frictionless transactions. I am honored by the fact SIAE selected the blockchain developed by Algorand, making it the backbone of its new initiative. I will be thrilled to witness the creation of these solutions, supported by the performance and features we implemented in Algorand 2.0.

Management of intellectual property rights on Blockchain has seen increasing interest and development in the last few years, as public and private authorities look for better ways to manage the complex web of domestic and international IP protection regimes. The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has recently established its Blockchain Task Force, which is exploring blockchain use cases in this space and collaborating with international standards authorities to develop blockchain standards in IP.
